The story
The plate shows a figure picking his way through difficult, shadowed terrain, equipped with the tools of a night traveler. The motto lays out an explicit method: "In Chymicis versanti Natura, Ratio, Experientia & lectio, sint Dux, scipio, perspicilia & lampas" — to one occupied in chemical matters, let Nature, Reason, Experience, and Reading be guide, staff, spectacles, and lamp. Each tool maps to a faculty: Nature leads the way as a guide would, Reason steadies him like a staff, Experience corrects the eye the way spectacles do, Reading lights the path like a lamp. It is one of the more programmatic emblems in the book — less a symbol to decode than a stated method — and a useful corrective to the idea that Maier’s alchemy was pure mysticism: he argues, in image form, for a discipline built on observation and accumulated learning as much as on doctrine.
