The story

The engraving shows a giant single-stringed instrument, a monochord, running vertically through nested circles labeled Terra, Aqua, Aer, Ignis, then the planetary spheres up to the fixed stars, its tuning peg gripped by a hand reaching from a cloud. Fludd used it to argue that the universe’s proportions were literally musical: the same ratios that make a plucked string sound a fifth or an octave governed the spacing of the elements and planets, with God as the tuner who kept all creation in consonance. Notice the interval names (diapason, diatessaron) inscribed spiraling around the string itself. The image became a flashpoint: Johannes Kepler publicly attacked it as decorative mysticism dressed as astronomy, making this one of the clearest visual fault lines between Hermetic and emerging mathematical cosmology.
