The story
A page of dense Latin notes in a sixteenth-century hand, headed Opus practica, with marginal notes crowding both edges. The Wellcome identifies it as the work of John Dee, about 1590, from his Practica et accurtaciones Georgii Ryplay et Raimundi, notes on the alchemists George Ripley and Ramon Lull. In the corner is the small "ladder sign" that M. R. James pointed to in 1921 as the mark Dee left in the books he owned. Ripley and Lull are the two names this house keeps returning to, the scroll and the furnaces. This is the page where the Queen's astrologer sat down with both of them and took notes.
