The story

A round furnace stands on a stepped base, its body wrapped in bands of beaded ornament and crossed with a pair of X-shaped braces. Low down sits a small iron door with a latch, and a ring of keys hangs from it. Out of the open top rises a tall cone ending in a square chimney. The drawing is pen and grey wash on a full page, with faint lines of German text showing through from the other side of the leaf. Krohnemann signed this book at Bayreuth in 1677. The detail worth stopping on is the ring of keys: a furnace that had to be locked, in a book about making the universal tincture.
