The story

A wide-bellied flask stands on the page with a stopper in its neck, filled with a grey, gritty sediment at the bottom and a band of clear green liquid above. Two dark lumps of ore hang in the air on either side of it, each with its own short label, and a paragraph of German runs across the top. Christian Wilhelm von Krohnemann wrote and drew this book himself and signed its dedication to the Princess of Brandenburg at Bayreuth on 10 August 1677. The Wellcome catalogue counts fifty large drawings in watercolour or wash. This is the first of the flasks, and the stones beside it show the reader what went in before anything turned green.
