The story

A tall square-shouldered bottle stands alone on the page with a stopper in its narrow neck. At its base sits a band of dark red-brown sediment, and above it a clear green liquid speckled with darker points, as if something were settling or forming. Two lines of German are written beside the neck. Krohnemann drew it for Von der Universal Tinctur, which he signed at Bayreuth in 1677. The Wellcome holds the book as his own manuscript, made in his hand. Every other vessel in the book is a round-bellied flask; this one is a bottle, the kind found in any apothecary, and it may be the closest the book comes to a picture of something he kept on a shelf.
