The story

Two long-necked flasks stand side by side on a bare page, each stoppered and drawn in fine outline. The left one is filled to half its belly with a hard, bright red, and a few words of German are written into the empty glass above it. The right one holds a deep purple. Nothing else is on the leaf. Krohnemann's Von der Universal Tinctur, written and drawn in his own hand at Bayreuth in 1677, runs through dozens of these paired flasks, each pair a record of how a liquid should look at one moment of the work. Read as a sequence, they form a colour chart drawn more than three centuries before the word existed.
