The story

A deep oval tub with ring handles fills the lower half of the page, drawn in grey wash with its water shown as soft shading. The necks of long flasks rise up out of it and run off the top of the sheet. A short note in German sits beside the tub. This page is one half of the single double-page drawing the Wellcome records in Von der Universal Tinctur, the book Christian Wilhelm von Krohnemann wrote and illustrated at Bayreuth in 1677. A water bath was how alchemists kept a vessel warm without cracking it. The painter has made the plain tub the largest object in the book.
