The story

A tall cylinder with a domed lid hangs between two twisted ropes, and through a band cut into its middle we see a ring of long-necked glass vessels suspended upside down, their round ends hanging like bells. The whole thing is drawn in pen and grey wash, filling the page from top to bottom, with a brief note in German at the upper left. This is one of the six full-page drawings the Wellcome catalogue records in Von der Universal Tinctur, which Christian Wilhelm von Krohnemann signed at Bayreuth in 1677. He died in 1686. The drawing has the confidence of a man who expected someone to build it.
