The story

Two very tall flasks stretch nearly the full height of the page, their round bellies filled deep with the same strong red. A note in German is written in the space between the necks, the one line of text on the leaf. After the many pairs of contrasting colours that come before it, this is a pair that agrees. Krohnemann drew these in wash and watercolour for his Von der Universal Tinctur, made in Bayreuth in 1677 and dedicated to the Princess of Brandenburg. The Wellcome catalogue counts fifty drawings in the volume. Here the reader is shown what the end of the work was meant to look like, twice, so there could be no mistake.
