The story

Six small furnaces are set out across the page: a domed one striped with dark diamonds, a round one with an arched door, a straight tower, two square ones with holes in their tops and a little cluster of domes and spouts at the bottom. Each shows red fire at its door. The page is numbered 63. The Wellcome's fifteenth-century Ymage de Vie, a French and Latin book of alchemical processes attributed to Raymond Lull, carries several of these full-page sheets of apparatus. This one works like a showroom: every shape of furnace a reader might need, drawn at the same size so they can be compared before anything is built.
